About me

I'm really quite boring. Just being the Grand High Supreme and Mighty Empress of the Known Universe and Beyond doesn't mean you're interesting, y'know! I go dragon hunting on weekends and demon stalking at night. I eschew prescriptivist linguistics as the tool of the oppressor. In my spare time, I go on covert missions for the shadowy powers that rule the universe. They're evil, sure, but it's still better than Bush. My hobbies include blowing bubbles, reading at superhuman speeds, and trying to force my friends to play Calvinball. I loathe and abhor mushrooms, and consider them a plague upon the earth.

My family

I have a sister, [livejournal.com profile] gingembre, and a foster sister, [livejournal.com profile] lizziey. Jenn is older than I am by three years. She has a little girl, Ana, who turned two on 5/15/05. Nice number, don't you think? Later this year, Jenn will have her second child. Lizziey also has a child, Seth, who turned two three days before Ana did. His baby brother is due sometime before Ana's sibling. I don't see them as much as I'd like.

My mother, [livejournal.com profile] amkergis, taught me many things I know. She is the reason I moonlight as the Red Pencil of DOOM. Fear us!

I am rather sketchy about how many friends I actually have. However, I will note that many of my friends are as close to me as family. You know who you are. *hugs*

Languages

I am trying to make my own language, off and on, don't expect to see it any time soon. Actually, I'm not, because I'm lazy. But I like to pretend. Aside from that, I speak very good English, very bad Latin, very little Spanish, and no French at all, though I used to be able to read it when I was little. I'm interested in learning... well, lots of things, primarily Walloon (language of my ancestors, doncha know), ASL (signed languages are inherantly cool), and Mandarin (I have a feeling that it'll be useful some day soon....)

Current events

I have an unfortunate addiction to the news. I say unfortunate because it's all very depressing. Right now, my primary interest is in reading about civil rights in the US. Like I said, it's all very depressing.

Other things

By "other things" I mean "other perseverations". I have a deep thread of interest in all things autism. I periodically am interested in other people's religious beliefs (I am agnostic). I'm interested in gay and disability rights (no, I don't know why I lump them together). Oh, and I'm obsessed with the author Hilari Bell. I won't stop talking about it until she has a crazy fandom.

Books

As I said, I am very much obsessed with the sci-fi/fantasy author Hilari Bell. Tamora Pierce has given her latest book, Rise of a Hero, rave reviews. Ms. Bell is... *sighs* I can't explain it. She's just a really good author.

My other favorite author is John Marsden, who wrote the Tomorrow When the War Began series. This is a series of very realistic books about a group of teens after Australia was (in the books) invaded. Despite the fact that they turn terrorist (their own words, a nice bit of honesty), the books focus primarily on their reasons and feelings, not on random violence.

I've also developed a love for picture books since I started buying them for my niece, Ana. I'll post a list of my favorites here in a bit.

Movies

Here's my embarassing confession. I like bad movies. I like made-for-tv Lifetime movies. I like made-for-tv Disney movies. Sappy stories, implausible plots, bad acting, cheesy writing? I love it. So no movie advice from me.

TV shows

I also like bad TV shows. But! Not every TV show I am willing to watch is bad. I'll type up a list when it cools down.

Communities

I maintain four communities.

[livejournal.com profile] book_icons is, as the name implies, a place for book-related icons. I make a bit of a nuisance of myself by asking people with good bookish icons to crosspost there, but so far nobody's complained.

[livejournal.com profile] youngwizards is a community for Diane Duane's Wizardry series. It's horribly inactive. Please check it out.

[livejournal.com profile] asperger is a community for people on the autistic spectrum. It's not a support group for parents and families.

[livejournal.com profile] _comic_icons_ is related to [livejournal.com profile] book_icons. I don't take good care of this comm. *sniffles*

Support

I am a supporthelp in the Gunk and Comms categories. This means that I'm cool. Really. If you really want to ask for help here, you can, but I reserve the right to tell you no, and direct you to the support area. You're better off going there instead, really. If your answer isn't in the FAQs, then you should open a support request. I'm not paid enough to help people in my own journal. (Exceptions are made for my dearest friends, but only if I actually can help you. I still expect my dearest friends to check the FAQs first.)

If you've been volunteering on the support board, and are wondering why your answer was not approved, you should ask for help in [livejournal.com profile] helpscreening.

Bad habits

Finally, I'm an unrepentant commentwhore. If I've added you as a friend and you have no idea why, that's probably it. I figured you were interesting and decided that if I added you, you might add me back and sometimes comment in my journal. Yes. I admit it. The shame. The shame! If you do decide to add me to your friends list, or add me back, please note that I update a lot. My sister actually had to make a separate friends group just to deal with me :( So be warned.

VERY IMPORTANT! DO NOT PASS THIS BY!

I am mildly autistic. I only bring this up because sometimes I manage to unintentionally offend people. If this happens, I would appreciate it if you could explain what I said, exactly, that upset you, and, if possible, why. Sometimes I do mean to offend, just like everyone else, but most of the time it's an accident caused by misunderstanding. If you can't do that, please don't mention that I was rude or tactless, because this causes me a lot of unneeded stress, and will likely lead to an angry post about you in my livejournal. And yes, this IS important, despite what you think... otherwise I'll keep blindly upsetting you because I don't know any better.

Linkies!

So, what do you think? Obviously, it's not nearly edited enough, and it's still unpolished. Anything I should add? Anything I should take away? Anything I should change?

It's not really clear that [livejournal.com profile] gingembre is Jenn. I only knew that from your past posts. And you spelled "inherently" wrong in the Languages section. :)

By the way, did they get rid of the little community icon (the reddish thing, instead of the person/head)? I thought it was cool to differentiate between a personal journal and a community journal.

oh my god!

Tomorrow when the war began was a series!?!

Why didn't anyone tell me? Here I was raving about how fantastic of a book it was and I never even knew that it was a series!

Thank you, Connie! You're my savior once again!

Random story.

Yesterday at work, as I was going through the metal detector into my building, the [African-American—yes, this is related to the story] man in front of me (who seemed a little crazy) was carrying about a million things and had to put them down on the little table. (I, being used to doing this every day, always put everything in my purse and never set off the metal detector.) In any case, one of the things he put down was a newspaper, and I guess the guard must have given him a funny look, because the man said "It's Chinese. I'd rather read Chinese than English, the news is better, none of that junk in the English papers, and it's what we're all going to be speaking before long anyway."

Since the guy was taking so long to be wanded, I just walked through while they were wanding him. And as I did, I looked down at the newspaper.

It was in Korean.
