What did people say before they could say "you sound like a broken record"?

"Shut Up"?

I doubt there was an earlier corollary to a broken record... it's the sort of thing that's distinctive enough that it would inspire a new saying, rather than alter an old one.

Therefore, my guess is "You're repeating yourself", or possibly "Yes, you already told me that".

:D

That makes me think of a similar question...what used to appear abouve a cartoon character's head if he had an idea back in the days when lightbulbs weren't invented yet?

I know! I know!

"I've heard that song before!" (From my great-grandfather, who grew up before records were all that common... possibly before the cylinder days...)

I think before records, they may have been forced to say: You sound like a robot so badly programed that it's stuck in an infinite loop.

or maybe not...

Probably: You sound possessed by demonic spirits.

I wouldn't mind having a candle appear over my head.

Callng someone a catbird or mockingbird would do the trick for me. :-p They both like to mimic and repeat sounds, sing something a little different, and then sometimes return to repeat the previous phrase...again and again.
