tried to sell a show focusing on lots of visible flesh. That isn't what made the Star Trek fan base so large.

Have you seen TOS? Miniskirts, and a lot of sex for Kirk...?

Yes, I grew up on it. But a lot of the Star Trek fan base comes from Star Trek: The Next Generation, because it was even better.

Also, old trek had a large proportion of episodes about interesting issues. It was sex, but it was also social commentary on currently relevant issues. On a side note, Old Trek had the first televised interracial kiss (although they did it in a disappointing manner).

I'm not saying the sex was a problem, but the lack of much else combined with destroying the universe... and they wonder why fans of Star Trek didn't like it?
