What *is* trackback?

It's like linking to someone else's post, but it also lets the original content provider know someone is linking to them.

And then, at least in MT/Typepad, wordpress, nucleus (and I dont know what else uses trackback), at the bottom of the original provider's post is a link to the children posts, with the first sentence or two in it. (Some blogs just automagically put it there in the open, some you have to click on 'trackbacks' like you hit 'comments' to read them.)

So if I liked this post, I'd write my own post, but instead of an html link, I'd do a trackback. People would still get directed to this post. You'd get a ping when someone came here from my journal.

At the bottom (above the comments) would be something like "trackbacks to this entry" and then a link to MY post with my opening lines, like "Conuly really gives great info on what's going on in LJ, just today blahdeeblahblah..." so people could read my stuff about your post.

It's like a web, a network, and I think it helps see who gets read/is trusted, and where an original story came from.

And you don't have to have it turned on, so if you dont want people trackbacking to you, it won't happen. And of course, you can still link the old fashioned way.

Maybe a lot of it is ego, but I found some great blogs that way, was able to expand info (sometimes a child post has additional info that the origianl poster didnt), get more opinions, and so on.

I just wonder if it would be possible to do with LJ, and if they would since SA is such a huge part of trackback.
