Let's just say that I hate this country, I hate people (both in general and in particular), and I want to start a commune somewhere else. ANYWHERE else. If we get enough dirt and rocks and random junk, we can build our own island, can't we?

In fact, screw a commune. I'll go back to my childhood dream and become a hermit.

Same here! It makes me almost wish I'd taken French classes in high school instead of Spanish. Of course, back then I also had no clue our economy would be so friggin' horrible or that our government would be a great mass of self-possessed fundie "Pharisees" (as another one of my friends put it).

I'm thinking of taking French again. I took it in high school and I was very good at it, so re-learning it to the point of it being useful actually seems feasible to me.

The only problem in this plan is that I really like the city I'm living in now, and I don't deal well with major transitions.

I actually live in Somerville, MA, which is just outside of Boston. I love it because I really like New England and it's a great place to live without a car.

Ah yes, that makes sense. I don't know the area well myself, but many of my friends have moved to that general region. I'm in the bay area of California (near San Francisco, Berkeley, etc.), which is in many ways similar except on the opposite side of the continent. (oh and my city listed is fake too)

I lived in San Francisco for a few months in the late 90s. Then I got too broke and came crawling back to Vermont with my tail between my legs (so to speak).

It's a lovely city but there's too many people in it. There's lots of people in Boston too, but they at least have the decent manners to ignore you most of the time. In San Fran, I used to get comments all the time about how fast I walked, it was weird.

Oh I don't live in SF, just near it. I mentioned it since most people have heard of it and would have a general idea of where that is, and not everyone knows of Oakland. I don't like SF at all - too crowded, too busy, too loud.

But I love Berkeley. People don't bug me. People tend to be good about disability issues. There are lots of nice, small stores. The streets usually aren't horribly crowded. The lights often are set up to chirp by default or on request for the blind. It's a good place for me.

SF has much busier, more crowded streets throughout most of it. I've been told there are some quieter parts of it, but I don't know the area too well. But mainly, it's nice to be living in a liberal area where I don't hate large numbers of the people I'm exposed to when I am exposed to random people.

Yeah, that's why I'd have to move to French Canada. If anywhere, I'd be comfortable in a place that has regular winters and people know how to handle that weather, is in a remote-ish area but not TOO far-flung from major civilization, and I must have the Appalachian Mountains...not flat or jagged terrain. I love the area where I live, but the city itself is so miserably planned, and there's nothing here as jobs and entertainment go (unless you're into NASCAR).

My major requirements for any place I live is that it be in a modern Western country), be close to water, and be someplace where you can get around without a car.

Oh yeah and I prefer fundies to not be breathing down my neck, but I figured that went without saying.
