Long time back, we had a cat named Ginger. Sweet cat, she's living with Marian-down-the-block now. At one point in her (then) young life, she had kittens. And for some reason I never understood, this caused part of her fur to change color, from ginger-ish to a cream color, for... well, forever. Is this *normal*?

*thinks*

Wow, that cat is getting on in years. This was all right when I met Lizziey, that's how long ago it was when Marian took her.

I don't know if it's "normal," but I vaguely recall my cat's fur pattern changing after she had kittens.

After my cat had surgery I asked him about my cat's fur... normally black, it was growing back white. He said that sometimes after a stressful event a cat's hair color can change... so I am guessing that perhaps having kittens could potentially be a "stressful" event... *shrugs*

That makes sense. It can happen to humans too. It's a cliche' about fear turning the hair white or stress giving you grey hairs, but there is some truth to it. It just isn't usually an immediate *poof* hair gone white sort of deal.

Rats with black coloring usually "rust" once they hit sexual maturity. Perhaps this is along the same line?
