Because I can't imagine how any reasonably minded person would just proclaim an entire group as being "self-righteous". Yes, I'm sure life and death situations can be summed up entirely as "right, logical" and "self-righteous". I don't even call anti-abortion advocates self-righteous, and youse guys *know* I have strong feelings on that side.

I felt like commenting, but why do I want to get into it with such people? Yes, I can imagine being trapped inside my own body. Been there, done that - just not for 15 years. Sucked, I admit, but my thoughts at the time weren't, how can I end this, they were, what can I do to improve this. I adore my lothario for sticking by me and being so supportive. Having someone I love around and still caring about me made it much, much easier. My case wasn't entirely comparable in many ways, I admit, but I only know the things I know and have to extrapolate from there.

I also find it kind of funny how so many people are so afraid of blindness. And I admit, I was. But it's so much less disabling than people think it'd be. I know a few people who would have serious issues if they went blind (one of which has a balance problem where she uses sight to compensate, she can't walk with her eyes closed, so she'd have problems. Another is an actress, and that's not a job you can really do while blind). But most people would really find they lose a lot less than they think they would.

In one of my college classes we were taught that most people say they'd rather lose their hearing than their vision, but studies of the newly blind and newly deaf show that it's much easier to lose your vision. As they say, blindness cuts you off from things, deafness cuts you off from people. Although lesso with the internet nowadays :)

But I'm sure people assume disability of all sorts is worse than it is - except for invisible disabilities, but those don't count because they look fine, so they must be fine.
