I have spent an eternity saying this.

Terri Schiavo is not on life support. She does not use a ventilator. I don't know where that story started, but here it ends. She is not hooked up to any machines. She uses a feeding tube. That is not life support. Taking her off the feeding tube will cause her to - slowly - starve or dehydrate.

There is evidence that she reacts to things around her. There is also evidence that her condition would be drastically improved if the money from the settlement had gone towards her treatment instead of her husband's court bills.

So please, base your opinions off of accurate information.

And now, I will let other people talk about being in situations where they were believed dead, and post those links (links I've posted before) about other people who nearly died because "after all, she's not going to recover, might as well pull the plug now" - and at the time, they were conscious.

I don't make the definition, I just use it. Probably, though, because you can survive quite a long time without food and water... and she could, with effort, most likely be fed another way.

I just realized, however, that the feeding tube isn't connected 24/7 but rather only at mealtimes. I don't know how I missed that in reading about her. So I suppose this definition of life support is a moot point since if she's not hooked up to machines all the time, it's definitely not life support...whatever life support is!

I *think* the reasoning runs something like "you can't live without breathing, or without your heart beating, so something that forces your lungs to expand and your heart to beat is life support, but you can live for some time without food or water, so a feeding tube isn't life support" or maybe "things that make your heart and lungs work are working for your body, but a feeding tube is just helping your body do what it does naturally (digest food) since that part of your body is really working just fine"

I mean, dialysis is the same thing, in a way - you can't live without expelling waste from your system and it's an unnatural way to do that. But you wouldn't consider that life support because your body is already producing the waste, it just needs a little help getting rid of it.

Actually, you can make a much better argument for dialysis being life support than you can for a feeding tube. But it's kind of pointless, as very few people would say people who need dialysis should die.

Sure, why not.

Have you ever considered that the first three letters in dialysis are also the first three letters in diablo? And we all know what diablo means - SATAN! People who use dialysis are clearly devils, using the devil's instruments in order to sustain their petty lives at the expense of others! We should take away those unholy devices in order that they may be saved, and die in heavenly bliss!
