First go clicky...

Sam Ward, principal of Fleming Island High School, said he pulled the senior class picture because Kelli Davis was wearing boy's clothes.

And...? I'm sorry, I thought this was the Century of the Fruitbat 21st century. Surely females, at least, aren't forced to go around swooning in corsets...?

Most of the 24 people who spoke at the meeting supported Kelli Davis.

"This is not to be treated as a gay rights issue," said her mother, Cindi Davis. "Rather it's a human rights issue."

Hear, hear.

Others applauded Ward's decision, including Karen Gordon, who said, "When uniformity is compromised, then authority no longer holds."

WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN??? Seriously, what the fuck? I can't even think of words to describe how angry this statement makes me feel.

Officials at the northeastern Florida school have said the picture was pulled from the yearbook because Davis did not follow the rules on dress.

And their dress code forbids this? Wha...?

School board attorney Bruce Bickner said there is no written dress code for senior pictures, but principals have the authority to set standards.

Oh, so they don't have a dress code. So, basically, they pulled these asinine rules out of their ass, and got offended when she didn't follow the rules she had no way of knowing existed.

The student editor of the yearbook, Keri Sewell, was fired after refusing her adviser's order to take the picture out.

And people wonder why teens don't have much faith or belief in the 1st Amendment. Possibly because they never get to exercise their First Amendment rights?

I'm going to go cry now.

Boy's clothes? How much more subjective can you get? Where, exactly, do girl's clothes become boy's clothes?

I'd better find some shorter shorts

So, boy's clothes are meant to show cleavage and end above the knee? ;p

again. another reprehensible travesty. in all your experiences and flirtations with other languages, what word would best describe our current predicament?

Höpöhöpö is a rather fun looking Finnish word that apparently means rubbish or nonsense. Not quite right, but a lovely little word nonetheless.

I disagree with the mother. It's not a human rights issue.

It should even fucking be an issue. Why the hell is this asinanity even debated?

My junior year of high school (first year at a public magnet boarding school), our director/principal was a conservative Catholic who somehow managed to miss out on the coolness factors employed by the other Catholic faculty and staff. He barred a lesbian student from attending prom with her girlfriend because she wanted to wear a tux.

The next year, he was gone, we had a decent human being (and piano enthusiast) in charge, the prom queen was named Jeremy, and I wore pants to grad.

I went to a private school-- luckily, everyone wore pants and polo shirts as their uniform, so there was no issue of "this girl looks too butch." Though I never saw anyone try to dress "like a boy" in senior pictures or at the prom.

...Hell, this is the school that wouldn't let us start the GSA because it might offend someone, despite it having the highest gay population I've ever witnessed in a high school.

And you hit the nail on the head about the First Amendment. At least in private school they make you sign your rights away, rather than arbitrarily yanking them. -.-
