Why?

No, seriously. I accept that it looks cool, but... why? Isn't it more work to cut out and use? And a bit wasteful of paper?

And how do they decide what things become octagons? Cards, yes. Whiteboards, no. Disks, yes. Books, probably not (I really can't recall). Folded up flags on coffins? Definitely not. Photos? Sometimes.

Where is the logic?

Octagons are common architectural shapes used in Mormon and Masonic buildings and designs. Since the original BSG was created by LDS members and was based around the religion there are a lot of little references to the religion all over the place. It was also done to make the show different from modern technology and the technology and money in Star Trek.
