I hate having to use the icon.

The nation’s new education secretary denounced PBS on Tuesday for spending public money on a cartoon with lesbian characters, saying many parents would not want children exposed to such lifestyles.

And many parents don't mind, or would appreciate it. If certain parents don't want their children "exposed to such lifestyles", they can do something novel - turn off the TV. It doesn't have to be on all the time. Instead, their kids can read an actual book. Perhaps an Arthur book. Those predate the TV show, y'know.

“Many parents would not want their young children exposed to the lifestyles portrayed in the episode,” Spellings wrote in a letter sent Tuesday to Pat Mitchell, president and chief executive officer of PBS.

See above comment. And what's with the word "exposed"? It's not like teh gay!!! is catching or anything.

“Congress’ and the Department’s purpose in funding this programming certainly was not to introduce this kind of subject matter to children, particularly through the powerful and intimate medium of television.”

WHAT subject matter? Are they kissing? Having hot bunny sex? What, exactly?

She asked that her department’s seal or any statement linking the department to the show be removed. She asked PBS to notify its member stations of the nature of show so they could review it before airing it. And she asked for the refund “in the interest of avoiding embroiling the Ready-To-Learn program in a controversy that will only hurt” it.

*dramatic eyeroll* Oh, yeah, she wanted to avoid controversy. Uh-huh. Riiiight.

In closing, she warned: “You can be assured that in the future the department will be more clear as to its expectations for any future programming that it funds.”

Sometimes, I just wanna cry.

That reminds mf of work yesterday. I found some great photos of some people, to not incriminate people, Fishing. There were photos of men and women fishing, but they wouldn't fit the application where you could see both the fish and the people.

I found a picture of 2 women laughing anf fishing. I was told not to use that one because they dont want to 'ook like a lesbian fishing establishment'.

I told my art director, and even he kind of scoffed. XD

Dang it! Finally a happy-rainbow-friendly-kid's show and I'm not going to be able to see it. I'm just curious how they would present the couples. Grr. . . I should go buy dozens of copies of Heather Has Two Mommies and leave them where kids can find them.

Oooh, interracial. You're a risk-taker, you are, making a suggestion like that. And then, just to make the conservatives REALLY mad, Spongebob can come in. . . .

I figured it would be something like that -- "Jane and Milly Smith own the Vermont Maple Syrup orchard, where Buster is visiting today." Not "Jane and Milly Smith, LESBIANS."

Having also seen the Arthur show, interracial would probably end up being interspecies ;0) Don't see that going down well.

Thinking about it, the theme song is "hey (hey) what a wonderful kind of day when we can learn to work and play and get along with each other"

omgit'spromotingtolerance! Burn it!

On the other hand, PBS's vice-president for programming basically told her to go fuck herself. That warmed my heart.
