And better access to birth control and abortion. No matter what your take on abortion, I'm sure you feel it is preferable to infanticide, which is the traditional recourse for parents who had no access to decent birth control options (yes, including abortion).

Of course, this woman theoretically did have access to those options, this is New York, but she may have had trouble getting it, or may not have known her options.

More to the point, we really really need to educate people on the safe-haven options. The article says that there was a hospital and a police station within walking distance, and under NY state law she could have dropped the kid off there and walked away. She might not have known that... if she'd known that, she might have done it.

Definitely - but safe-haven options don't always work. There've been cases where women who tried those ended up arrested anyway, leading to the ultimate WTF.

it is really disturbing on the whole. personally, i would also rather know that someone got a safe abortion than murdered their kid or got a backalley abortion. its terrible. we have so far to go yet.
