Occasionally, people post on book-related communities asking for book advice for a kid of a certain age range. Unless we know what this kid likes to read, though, we can't really suggest books. So I'm going to start suggesting magazines. A year-long subscription to a magazine is like several books a year. Also, for less-eager readers, it's easier to read a magazine because the articles are shorter than books, and because they usually have pictures, but they're supposed to, so it's not like reading a picture book.

Probably the best group of kids' magazines are made by Cricket.

They have a whole series of literary-type magazines, from Babybug (infant board books) and Ladybug, to Spider (6-9) and Cricket (9-14) and Cicada (older, seems to have a lot of reader submissions). They've got an insane number of non-literary magazines, listed here. They don't have advertisements, which is always a good thing, even if it does raise the price somewhat.

Cricket, I dearly love thee. *hugs the memories*

Oooooh! I used to get Cricket! I LOVED it. I loved it so much that my mom saved all of my magazines, and about five years later, I went through and read them all again.

I agree 100%. I get Cicada (or I would if the post office would deliver them in time) and we get Cricket and Spider at home and we got Ladybug for a while too, which is probably part of the reason for Hannah's obsession with ladybugs... And Muse is wonderful too.

Oh, Ladybug! We used to get that when we were little. So fun to read, especially the comics at the back.

As I read the first two sentences, I thought, "Cricket! She should know about Cricket." And you do, of course. So drat, no suggestions from me unless the child has obvious interests. Zoobooks are nifty for about 6-12 years. I know at least one good kids' horse magazine, "Young Rider."

If you don't mind having a mild Christian moral magazine that's good and not obvious, "Highlights" is like Cricket/Cicada.

Ah yes, Cricket memories. :-)
