The Illinois house on Tuesday passed a bill banning discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people and sent it to Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who has said he supports the measure

Yay!

Of course, the sillies did have something to say...

Opponents argued that the measure would lead to approval of same-sex marriage and allow cross-dressers to use the restrooms of the opposite sex.

1. Who cares? You're not the one getting married!
2. Seriously, who the fuck cares? You can't see anything in the bathroom. No, really. It's all hidden away in a stall if you're female, and nobody's looking if you're a guy (at least, I should hope not) and it's just not that big a deal. Grow up already.

I'd like to invite them to the Castro in San Francisco, where many places have co-ed bathrooms. And you know, strangely enough, nobody spontaneously combusts from the horror!

When I was in France all the toilets were unisex (urinals and all). I couldn't get used to it and waited for all the men to leave before going through. Yes, I'm squeemish.

As far as this goes, I think that you should use the toilets for the gender you identify with.
That is, a true MTF transexual (pre or post op, I dont' care) should use the ladies; a man in a dress should use the gents.

OR all loos should be unisex. But, y'know, without urinals in the public areas. I don't want penises running around loose where I wash my hands. (yes, I know I live with my father, shut up.)

The whole unisex bathroom issue was what they used to keep the Equal Rights Amendment from passing. It was a threadbare argument (but an effective one) then. Bringing up this "squick propaganda" to relate it with this issue is even lamer, and it's an insult to the intelligence.

Unisex bathrooms would be a marvelous thing for those who aren't readily identifiable by either gender, too. People like Les Feinberg often get crap for going into the restroom that actually coincides with their birth sex, because they're so androgynous.

It took me 2 years to be able to take a dump around my own wife, so I doubt I could do it in the same room as a female co-worker (or a stranger).

Even if you put yourself in the mindset of these opponents and refuse to recognize a person's gender and instead insist on viewing them in regards to their sex, what's the issue with "cross-dressers?" Bathrooms have stalls, walls, doors, etc. It's not like you have to do your business with anyone watching.
