Wow... just after I read this, my mother came in and said: "They just had something on the radio about how rats can distinguish between Dutch and Japanese!"
I kid you not, my mom's previous dog used to go ballistic whenever he heard someone speaking Chinese on television. And I had a friend whose family spoke German around the house and her dog was kind of freaked out by hearing people speak English, so I did my best to calm him with what little German I knew. "Vas is laus?" ("what's the matter?") "Trinken se apefelsaft?" (Do you drink applejuice) and "Ich raugh nicht." (I don't smoke) My spelling probably sucks though!
