Well I'm sure they convicted the guy for other reasons too. But the press seems to of homed in on the lack of emotion displayed. At least the press I'm seeing up here on our news feeds to canada that show clips of the trial. I'd have to say though loosing your wife and child would probably make most people feel something or zone out.

I don't display alot of emotion either but in court I've never had it used against me and I have been to court alot.(however it was family court against my ex. Also observing my uncle who was a civil court judge though I wasn't exactly testifying in those cases my uncle sat on.)

Can't say anything much about the literal press, but the TV newsmedia is a bunch of professional actors doing professional level emotional displays. I'd be biased against them, too (http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/dirtylau.htm).
