Some guy who deserted from the Army wants to get refugee status in Canada.

He joined up, of course, for education benefits.

I don't think he'll be successful. It's not like we're under a draft. He voluntarily chose to go into the Army, and it's his own bad luck that there happened to be a chance that he could get killed that way.

Edit: Link's not working. Should be http://premium.cnn.com/pr/video/meta/us/2004/12/11/ but it's not working a'tall. Sorry. You can find the link at CNN, anyway.

When you join the military, however, you sign up to protect the Constitution and the citizens of the United States. This "war" does not, by any normal human standards, qualify as a reason for our troops to die.

One should bear in mind the possibilty of killing or being killed when one joins the military, this is true. I couldn't view the clip when I first saw this entry, but I see what your're saying.

I just object to our soldiers being used as Bush's little Risk pieces, and so I can't blame the guy for not wanting to go.

If it's the guy I think it is he has been on canadian news off and on for awhile now. He's been also doing public speaking. Supposedly he has moral issue with the war and views it as an illegal war.

Now if there was a draft I can see it. I mean we had people coming up here before from vietnam draft. But people weren't drafted. Weather he likes the war or not he's been ordered. Unless he's specifically ordered to comit something that would go as war crime I'm not sure what the legality is of him making such claim to stay out. Military does alot during the war. While we mostly hear of them blowing up eachother fact is they do alot of rebuilding and behind the scenese work. This dude though I believe was to be a driver. So he had some chance of getting blown up as he was to drive superiors around. But its not exactly the toughest or most dangerous military job.

I have mixed feeligns on his claim. I may not like the reasons for the war(and that has nothing to do with weather or not Hussain needed tossed out) and I may dislike some happenings of it(think prison pics that were the buzz in the media). But I don't think this guy is trying to get out necisarily for the same reasons others have tried to escape duty. I think they may well send him back to the US. It doesn't quite have same war torn type claim rights as 3rd world nations do for one. Quality of life is reasonable for another.

While I feel sorry for the guy, he did join up voluntarily. AFAIK, no one forced him at gunpoint to join the army. I can understand his being opposed to this war as an unjust one, but I don't think they give you a choice once you're in the military: "Oh, I think I'll sit this one out, thanks."

The problem now is that if he does get sent overseas, he'll be persona non grata with his fellow soldiers. He'll probably die or get seriously wounded in a "friendly fire" incident.
