Mnemonics, when done properly, can help you remember things. Chanting "King Phillip Comes Over For Good Sex" can help you remember the order of classification: Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. Saying "King Phillip Can Order Fine Gold and Silver" will cause problems if you try to add an A word in there, but should be essentially fine.

It took me several years to memorize the order of the planets in our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and maybe Pluto) because somehow I memorized the sentence "My Very Energetic Mother Just Gave Us Nine Pizzas" where I should've said served. *sighs*

Yes. This was random.

I personally never had a problem with the order of the planets, partly because I had an awesome Magic School Bus CD-ROM game that I used to play all the time back in kindergarten and partly because I've been a Sailormoon fan for almost half my life. ;)

For me it was the Blue's Clues song about the planets that my kids drilled into my head!

We had to make up one of those things for the planets in grade 7, I got as far as "My very evil mother" then it kind of fell apart. I know it has somethign to do with pins though...

I have one to remember which guitar strings are which. I think that's the only one I use any more, but I remember using them a lot when I was a kid.

I made one for myself for the Kingdom-Species thing.

*ahem*

Silly Gophers Fight Over Classy Popcorn Kettles.
It was easier for me to go from small (species) up rather than the other way around. besides, the mnemonic was silly. King Phillip? bwah?

and I just learned the planet's order. XD

The other ones Mnemonics I know are little ditties for math: The number in the front by the number in the front ~and~ the number underneath by the number underneath. for radicals (those Square Root numbers. EVIL they are.) That tune will never leave my brain.

have you listened to 'the Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas', by They Might be Giants? it's a genuinely good song on it's own, and it does tell how the sun works.

I remember we learned some King Phillip mnemonic in biology, but I can't even remember it now, let alone the order. I think it would have stuck with me much better if we had learned 'King Phillip Came Over For Good Sex'! That's way better.

My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets

:D

Of course, I believe that Plusto isn't technically a planet, although this is based on the fact that Stephen Fry Said So.

Mary's Violet Eyes Make Jack Stay Up Nights, Perhaps.

Of course, the solar-system mnemonics all presume that you know the difference between Mercury and Mars.

For the kingdom heirarchy schpeel, I prefer my, "Korean powers converting our funky gorgeous sheep". And what's more, is I have great artwork (http://thumbs.deviantart.com/300W/images3.deviantart.com/i/2004/151/8/0/KPCOFGS.jpg) to acompany it. Can things get better?

I also used teh magic schoolbus to memorize the planets. For the order of classification, I tried to use the king one, but it didnt stick. I ended up using Ken, please come over for great sex.

Hehehe, every country/region seems to have it's own method to memorise the planets. The one I learned probably isn't a good one, but it works: My Very Early Model Army Jeep Still Uses Neptune Petrol. But it does include the asteroid belt which most of those others don't from what I just read.
