Got an interview

For the job I would like the least, but any job is a job, right? So wish me luck. (Edit: No, nevermind. Dude called me before I left for the interview and kept me on the phone for an hour all to tell me he was certain the commute would not work out. This did not require an hourlong phone call, or, indeed, a phone call of any length at all.)

Also, today is A's birthday, so happy birthday! They will never see this.

I once had an interview for a job that would have been ideal for me, which is why I applied despite a rather hideous commute. The interviewer spent most of the interview implying, without stating, that the commute was too long - if that's what she felt, why did she call me in for an interview at all? - and then afterwards sent me a message claiming that the job's work hours violated the employer's work hours policy, which I don't believe because they would have checked that first. I think it was just a way of getting rid of me, not a unique tactic.

TBF, it sounds like he's been burned a lot by people who thought they could deal with the commute and then bailed on him quickly. But seriously, it did not take an hour.

I honestly thought I'd seen every insane interview situation out there. But these are new to me.

And what's with all the discussion of commutes? I've gone out of my way for interviews, and we never discussed the commute.

Right? And I start saying things like "We've been talking about this for thirty minutes" and he still keeps talking. I'd say "take a hint" but - I wasn't hinting!

They actually called you to talk you out of interviewing for the job - because they thought the commute wouldn't work out? And spent an hour on the phone - talking you out of it? Whoa. That's insane.

I've had over 100 job interviews in my lifetime, and interviewed people for jobs - and that's a new one. I've never anyone do that before. I'm trying to remember if we ever did it at my organization? No. We hire people with two hour to three hour commutes. We did ask them if they had any issues working out in the vicinity, but that's it.

There are people commuting to Jamaica, Queens from Stamford, CT, and from New Jersey. Also people commuting to Manhattan from Northport, Seaford, Hicksville, Suffolk County, Long Island, and Glenn Cove, not to mention Montauk. We're talking two-three hour commutes in some instances, both ways.

I also know people commuting from Beacon to Jamica, Queens.

Yeah, it was wild. And then, even when I was like "Okay, great, I will not interview" he still kept talking. It was another half an hour, quarter hour before I could disengage!

You have more patience than I; I would have hung up after saying “I will not interview”. I mean, what’s he going to do to you? (And it’s not like you’d want a job working for a person who does this, either, so no bridges burned.)

That's just insane. A lonely or bored interviewer who felt the need to talk? I mean, I get it to a certain extent? But he's calling to talk you out of coming for the interview. LOL!
