I repeat, a baby squirrel.

Or... well, a child squirrel? It's not a baby baby, it's furred and alone and eensy and also miserably wet. But not so teensy weensy that it obviously shouldn't be out by itself.

Maybe. I don't know how squirrels raise their babies, maybe this is what they do.
