True alligators don't live in the Amazon. Various kinds of caimans do (including the black caiman, which is larger than the American alligator). And a couple kinds of crocodile live in northern South America (not sure their range technically goes into the Amazon, certainly not into Bolivia). So I'm guessing the "alligators" in question are actually black caimans.
