So, this girl in this book has a crush and an apparent romantic rival

Not that she seems to understand why she hates that other girl. Lots of people try to explain it to her, but no, it goes right over her head every time.

The thing is... I'm not entirely sure the author understands either, because if you just go by the amount of description to each person's habits and appearances the rival definitely beats out the crush - and she's not even present for the first two books!

So many words devoted to how irritatingly attractive and competent this other girl is! So many.

I have some questions as to the writer's focus here. Please - work out who's who in the love triangle! Be sure you're clear on everybody's roles!

I am reminded of how it's very easy to read the narrator of "Jolene" as being more into Jolene than her own man.
