One of those.

And mostly this has meant they work noisily for three or four hours and then go do something else, I don't know what. They started a bit before Christmas, of course they didn't work on the holidays.

Today it means they worked noisily for a few hours, fucked off the entire rest of the day as usual, and then resumed work at midnight.

Guys. It's 3:15 and they are still at it.

OMG, that’s crazy. I’d be tempted to complain to the city.

Probably you should complain to both the city agency and your city council member. (Borough rep?) Or at least here, city council members are usually responsive to voter complaints.

I can't wait for them to rip up the street and fix our sewers. Ever since we moved in... when it rains really heavily the sewer will back up through the drain and into our basement. We put in a check valve which helps, but we have two waster detectors so we can turn on pumps to suck the water from the drain.

They're doing the whole street block by block and it looks like it'll take a few more years. *sigh*

Did their notice say they were going to work nights? Otherwise, Check your local bylaws for work hours and noise, then complain to the city. Starting up at midnight is unreasonable!

Edit: Isn't a polar vortex headed your way soon? They might be trying to beat that.

Also, my sympathies. My city replaced water and sewer lines under our street last year. It was worth it, but the 4-month project ended up taking 6. (And damn our entire house shook when they ripped out the sidewalks and road.)

Sure it's not the gas line? They've been ripping up the sidewalks and streets in Brooklyn fixing gas lines for the last five years now.

The gas one has these little circles with marks through them in yellow paint. They've been doing that all over the city. The difficulty is - the city has an antiquated gas and electrical grid, and has to replace the pipes for the gas line (they are yellow by the way), and rewire everything.

I know more about all of this then I want to. One of the pitfalls of working in infrastructure and construction in a major city/state agency.

Because of course noise ordinances, if enforced at all, do not apply to government "services". Non-emergency noise in the wee hours is madness!

I get doing the work when it's least likely there will be cars on the street, but seriously, loud construction work when people are trying to sleep?
