I really do. My approach to translation is like this:

Look at the latin.
Put it off.
Realize it's due in three hours.
Open up an English translation of the text.
Go through the latin.
Translate.
Compare to the text.
Go back, see how they got their translation.
Translate again.
Ask for help.
Cry.
Submit work.
Worry that it's no good.
Stutter.
Repeat.

There's got to be an easier way.

I remember when I was in Japanese (which I am trying to learn again from a how to book) it went the same way. I find the easiest way to learn a language is when you are forced to speak it :)

Good old Latin

I found that when I took Latin in High School, many years ago, that I learned more about language itself than the actual Latin.

Just for fun(???) Check out Winne Ille Pu ;)

Eep.. I'm slightly glad that I didn't take Latin ^^ nto that Japanese is easier, but people in Latin complain about it.. and in Japanese, Sensei realizes that no one really knows what's going on, so we get to use our alphabet sheets on tests and stuff :)

Lucky you...

then again, the problems in my Japanese class aren't with the 'alphabets'... they're with the grammar and the damn kanji. And the point of writing tests while using grammar books is rather... doubtable...

Yeah.. if we ever actually get to learning grammar ^^; we're starting to learn kanji, though.

Easier way - drop class that requires Latin study and find a new class that doesn't require Latin study. ‡ nodnods ‡
