Wow, they were just going at it!

I've seen a whole bunch of chickadees and sparrows, plus mourning doves and one small, sparrow-sized bird with a red face that I think might be a finch...? And a cardinal who has perched in the tree, flown around the tree, and as near as I can tell declined to eat anything.

Hmph.

Cardinals can have a little trouble with the clinging-eating style of feeder. They are ground feeders or tree limb feeders. Some of them will learn to use a vertical suet feeder, but some will not!

I don't know what suet feeder you have--I have several kinds, and the one the towhees and other ground feeders love is the one that has a small tray under the suet. I like it too because it keeps most of the scraps from falling on the ground and therefore does not also feed rodents. It can hold pieces of fruit, too, which cardinals allegedly like (no cardinals locally).

PS JCS Wildlife had the best suet prices last year, but I haven't looked this year. Buying directly from them works fine; they sell on Amazon but Amazon takes a big cut from vendors, as we know.
