Eigengrau (German for "intrinsic gray"; pronounced also called Eigenlicht (Dutch and German for "intrinsic light"), dark light, or brain gray, is the uniform dark gray background color that many people report seeing in the absence of light.

Huh. I think I remember some Asimov stories where he described hyperspace as grey (because your senses are incapable of actually perceiving it, so that's what your brain told you the non-space out there was). I wonder if this is where he got the idea from.
