My father's mother told us she didn't like the color purple

She didn't have to tell us she liked garage sales! She sent us many things from garage sales. Quite a lot of them were purple, like, so much more than you'd expect.

When I was still pretty young she sent me a chunk of amethyst. Amethyst, as you know, is purple. She sent it to me because it's my birthstone.

Some years later I looked it up and found out that it's not. Amethyst is the birthstone for February. I was born January 31. My birthstone is garnet!

I suppose if I had to have a chunk of unshaped, unpolished stone I'd rather have amethyst anyway. Raw garnet looks like a rock. Raw amethyst looks like a crystal. Garnet is a lot easier to spell, though. I had to keep backspacing and fixing "amyt- no, that's not right" when I made this post.

My birthstone is opal, and there are SO many varieties of opals that I love it.

I LOVE purple, so I'd have been happy. Amethyst is beautiful. It's cool that you have it!

This is not the reason my father was semi-estranged from her, but I always think of it as being part of the whole.

my birthstones are moonstone (in the unshaped, unpolished form it looks like a fancy rock, depending on the color), pearl (which is good as is), & alexandrite (depending on if it's out of the rock or not like like a fancy crystal).
