Many times in my life I've advised people to read Shock Tactics by Saki and apply it to their own lives. This isn't my favorite Saki story, that's The Storyteller, but it's useful.

To my knowledge, nobody has ever taken me up on it, which is a pity. Maybe they think I'm joking, or they imagine that the part I mean they should do is the part with the letters instead of the part with the utterly unreasonable tantrums when dealing with utterly unreasonable people.

Oh well. Their loss.

at one point in my teens I'd read every Saki story I could lay my hands on, but I don't recall that one. the one that has always stuck vividly in my brain is The Open Window

I'd forgotten that one. It must be 20 years since I read it! It is exceedingly cunning.

Well, I've just read it :) Fortunately, I'm not prone to reading other people's correspondence or delving into their affairs, except to the degree that the offer them willingly to me.

Perhaps, unfortunately, I'm not much of a prankster either.

The Saki stories I always remember are 'Sredni Vashtar' and the one with inviting a guest who will ensure a house-party goes well by setting all the other guests at odds with her so they bond over it.

And the Boy Scouts who (presumably) start the Resistance by not turning up to the Victory Parade When William Came.

That is ... astonishing. I did very nearly the same thing with my mother when I was a kid. When I realized she was snooping I started planting things for her to find and sure enough she didn't have the sense to keep quiet about them.
