I was looking up how to repair the shower diverter, and hopefully all it needs is a good clean and not actual repair work, but anyway, there it was - somebody saying "spicket" where I'd say "faucet" or maybe "tap".

I don't have full access to DARE, but "spicket" seems derived from "spigot".

Google Ngrams says "spigot" is more common. "spicket" is barely above the x axis.

I *think* spigot is more common in the UK, so it would make sense that the Southern US would use a word derived from it. (My amateur understanding is the southern US is the closest to the way English was spoken/pronounced when English-speakers first got the the Americas.)

From the NE US, I used "spigot," then moved to the West and learned that "hose bib" is a common term here.

Spicket, mispronouncing Spigot. Outdoor water tap/faucet. I've heard the term a few times up here in Maine.

i am a spigot/spicket person, and it took looking at these comments for me to be able to spell it. Very much a verbal word.

I'd always heard it as spigot, wouldn't surprise me if there are alternate spellinks. And there's always the east/west thing.

Spigot, and it is a faucet. It's the kind you used to see on sides of houses for hoses. I grew up calling that a spigot.

Southeastener here and always thought of spigots at the outside of the house faucet, eg one valve, no hot water.

Wikipedia's take:

Spigot is used by professionals in the trade (such as plumbers), and typically refers to an outdoor fixture.[1]
Silcock (and sillcock), same as "spigot", referring to a "cock" (as in stopcock and petcock) that penetrates a foundation sill.
Bib (bibcock, and hose bib or hosebibb), usually a freeze-resistant version of a "spigot".
Wall hydrant, same as "hosebibb".

I'd never heard of the spicket variation. Cool. Before today, I would have said that spigot is the word for the hole through which the flow of stuff occurs and that faucet is the word for the valve that controls the flow. I grew up in English and French, in French Canada, for what it's worth.
