I think I saw it spelled "mid-vile" once.

"Despite huge differences in shape and form and mode of killing, all traps are modified leaves or parts of leaves."

Except one recently-recognized one, Triantha occidentalis, which uses hairs on its flower stalk instead.

I still giggle over the writer in one of my older fandoms who flatly said at the start of more than one story (pre-Ao3) Warnings: My English, my grammar and my current apathy toward both. Horrible. She was also the one who continually muddled up things like 'carnal' and 'cardinal', 'lose' and 'loose' and 'shudder' and 'shutter"... which, fair enough and like 'med evil' would not be caught by Spellcheck (but a quick readthough is too hard???)

PS - And on another story she wrote Notes: All mistakes, errors, misspellings, poor grammar....Are mine, All mine. Any words you don't recognize...I made up (for lack of a better excuse). Well, at least she's honest...

I don't think she believed in herself doing any light proofreading. Her stories were... it's hard to describe but they could be oddly readable even though she did go in for some serious bashing/woobifying at times as well. And I suspect that at the time she wrote, the fandom wasn't very critical of grammar etc or bashing/woobifying.

Thanks for the spongy moth reminder: we saw a couple in the driveway last summer, and I need to check for eggs before the leaves come out. (But probably after today's snow goes away.)

Most of the time, what someone thinks of as the medieval period is really close to, if not into, the early modern period. They tend to think 1400-1700 CE, not 400-1500 CE. Probably because there's a lot of long boring stretches in the later, and all the exciting politics and war comes in the former, at least according to popular opinion.

Not for me!

Late Antiquity > 1492 are more chocked with fascinating characters, events and information than Walnut-Raisin bread's got walnuts and raisins. The I study those eras the more fascinating and essential information is revealed. This is even more so if one looks at those eras globally and don't stick to, just, o u no, England (though that's fascinating and revealing as well).

As someone who has spent literal years looking for a non-terrible floor lamp (I gave up on non-ugly), by interviewing high-end designers she overlooked the extremely salient fact that, by definition, a floor lamp doesn't fit on a pallet. So anybody making non-high-end floor lamps has to make them to easily come apart into pallet-size or smaller segments for the flatpack, and thus, they are all wobbly and bad.

And since they're all wobbly and bad, the market is understandably smaller. (I have switched to clip and sconce lights solely because all mass-market floor lamps are wobbly and bad. Someday I will find a good pre-palletization one at a thrift store!)

(Actually, about half the time they mean "roughly Renaissance-ish, give or take", but they think they mean medieval.)

Preach it. I love telling people that Frisian is the closest language to Old English.

"Mid evil" means a 5 on the 10-point evil scale.

I am going to write a story set in the Mid Evil world, populated by lazy demons who never get enough points to graduate to Full Evil.

Maybe it will be like Scouting, and the demons have to earn badges for Evil but a lot of them just want to watch TV and play video games instead of learning how to make your own steel foot trap and set them in city parks, or how to start fires with a flick of your fingers.

Your struggles with people thrashing around trying to find a certain book finally reminded me to share that I recently found a book I've been searching for since the early 1980s. I was half-right on the title and kept getting nothing when I Googled it, and one day had a flash of inspiration and Googled a partial synopsis of the plot. Bingo! It was "Needles" by William Deverell and it has held up pretty well over time.
