This is a middle-grade series that's... actually kinda hard to categorize. I guess I'd say that it's a largely-realistic, slightly-AU series with some fantastical elements. I'd almost go so far as to categorize it as having a "weird atmosphere" except it's... not quite that weird. Lightly weird, maybe? Lightly weird, sorta realistic, except for all the things that aren't? It's not really a fantasy, despite the existence of ghosts (not very many ghosts, and people generally don't believe in them unless they know one) and weird iron but maybe it's a fantasy after all?
Also, there are some heavy themes for middle grade, but touched on in a sensitive way.
Anyway, for middle grade books which I like to read, this series is surprisingly hard to get through. I don't know, every book takes me a couple of tries before I can really dig in and enjoy it.
