And it is at least two decades past the warranty. Any recommendations for a new one?

No recs, but I can anti-rec Whirlpool. That's what our washer is, and it's constantly breaking in one way or another.

I used to work in an appliance store and I can tell you Whirlpool makes good stoves but lousy washing machines.

I only knew Whirlpool as dishwashers.

Oddly, my range is a Maytag; I associate that brand with washing machines.

Not necessarily. Mine did that, and it turned out there were a bunch of coins caught in the filter thing under the drum. Once we rather laboriously cleaned it out, it was good to go.

We needed a YouTube video and a wrench to fix it.

We've had good service from our low-end Maytag, decades worth. I am told they don't make them like that anymore.

Ours is Frigidaire, I think, and it does the job pretty well. I don't know yet if it will last for decades, since it's younger than the teenager.

I have a Speed Queen, a commercial machine. Mine has never needed a thing but they're supposedly easy to repair. They're good for people with really filthy clothes, which I definitely had when I was working. I've read the new ones aren't as durable.

Consumer Reports likes LG top loaders.

Do they still make top-loading washers with the central column that the clothes all spin around? I wish I had one like that. My current machine has no column, and I'm constantly having to re-arrange clothes that have got twisted together and thrown the machine off balance. I can sort of finesse it by layering the towels in a ring, then dropping the clothes in the center, but sometimes even finesse isn't enough.

I had a very good run with a Fisher and Paykel top-loader. It was a horizontal drum, rather than a vertical one, but it did well.

We bought an Electrolux front-loader (600 series) about a year ago and I really love it. I bought it because the salesperson in our local shop recommended it, and we've always had good experiences with this shop. I think he said that Electrolux is more popular in Europe, but they're starting to catch hold in the U.S. now, too? I do think it gets clothes cleaner than our old washer, even though that one was also a front-loader. Plus I wanted something that would be able to fit my son's enormous heavy comforter, and it does that.

Not Samsung or LG. They're so tied up with DRM on their repairs that our regulars are not allowed to touch them.

Around here, the Habitat ReStores sell only newer appliances, and they're all thoroughly tested. Some are scratch-and-dents from local factories. It's an option, at least.

Best of luck!
