If, however, I'm walking down the block with a full backpack that has, among other things, a frozen chicken and a glass bottle of mexican coca-cola in it, and it's open so wide stuff is about to spill out, nobody says a word.

A lot of people around here seem to demonize soda in a way that reminds me of the prohibitonists of about a hundred years ago. I understand they're concerned about health issues regarding sugar but some of them really overdo it. i wouldn't put it a bit past them to just let someone's Coke bottle smash open on the sidewalk and not do jack about it.
