The public schools in my city apparently cancelled school on Tuesday on a whim over the weekend. For the election, of course, but weirdly last minute and poorly communicated.

It looked really bizarre in the city school teacher facebook group I'm in. Like teachers didn't know if they had school or not?!

Our election was totally by mail this time, only a handful of city offices and a couple local issues. No rest for wicked children here.

I'd love to see Columbus Day go away as a holiday (as it has in many locations) and Election Day be a national holiday. Many countries do that. Some countries, such as Australia, have mandatory voting: you can be fined for not voting!

Of course the Republicans would hate that: the higher the voter turnout, the poorer they do.
