Here I am trying to decided between Boyntons to give to a friend for her baby (and heroically resisting an urge to buy ALL THE BOYNTONS) and she's up on Metafilter. Like many of the commenters I can, fully a decade and change after the nieces outgrew them, still recite a several Boyntons entirely by heart. Which I actually up and did shortly after deciding to send this bookish present.

(Psst - which are your top three Boynton books?)

The Going to Bed Book is the one I have fondest memories of looking through with the kids, but my favorite Boynton thing actually predates me having children or knowing she was a picture book author: it's this mug, which has been my favorite mug (now, my favorite mug at my parents' place) for like 30 years. It must have come from a garage sale or something, and I instantly claimed it, and, no lie, it's one of the few things in my parents' house I'm adamant I want to inherit :P

Is "Blue Moo" a book? I may need to change my answer.

Being a non-parent, non-aunt whose friends mostly move out of the city when they have kids, I have no experience with her books, but I have saved my pair of Boynton mugs from college, and within the past few weeks, just went on an eBay/Etsy spree rebuying vintage Boynton buttons with cartoon cats holding balloons . . .

Sorry for the segue, but it's oddly coincidental.

She's also on Twitter, as [profile] sandyboynton, tweeting pictures for things like National Chocolate Cake Day and the equinoxes. One of the cheeriest bits of my twitter feed.

Everybody ready for a barnyard dance!

It’s burned into my brain. And I still love it.

We LOVED her music albums - "Philadelphia Chickens" was a particular favorite, and we still are known to break out into "That's right we're cows!"

ETA: Oh, and I still get her wall calendar, because it's a great format with stickers of her characters.

Always give Boyntons to babies. And since I work in a baby nursery, I still read them fairly regularly--and many are burned into my brain. Which are favorites? So very hard to choose. Moo, Baa, Lala La is the first one my daughter owned but Barnyard Dance is way up there. And of course, the Going to Bed book.

Moo, Baa, La La La! — my daughter memorized it before she could read. I think my husband has a video of her rattling off the entire book without looking at it.

One, Two, Three! — my son's favorite, because he loves numbers.

The Going to Bed Book — my favorite! But my daughter liked it too. So peaceful. Reminds me of Goodnight Moon, which has a similar feel but always felt a little spooky/scary to me.

Blue Hat, Green Hat — honorable mention, because my husband would read this with our daughter sitting on his lap, and every time he read the word "OOPS" he would rock backwards and she would squeal with laughter.
