provided they have parental permission.

And yet, when I was in high school and we had the Mets vs. the Yankees and the scheduled parade after, not only did we not get excused absences but my bio teacher scheduled a test for that day. She did it just to be a pain, I know it. We were about the only students and teacher in attendance.

Well, to be fair, Mets vs Yankees wasn't a threat that could cause mass species extinction and the collapse of human civilizations...

If it's any consolation to you, some people are demanding that schools here ought to schedule tests on Fridays to stop students from attending the weekly climate marches. Some teachers are obliging.

(One of our sociology teachers, on the other hand, has done class trips to climate marches. Only to show her students how demonstrations work, to give them some hands-on experience in Living Democracy, of course.)

Well, back in the stone age in St. Louis, we went to school on the days the Cardinals were playing the Yankees in the World Series, but when the games were on, they drug out the school's TVs and classes were canceled for us to gather around and watch. (All the World Series games were in the afternoon back then, more worried about playing conditions in the fall than getting more viewers!) The few kids lucky enough to have tickets for any of the games in St. Louis were excused for the day.

Heh. When there was a bill in Congress to establish a sub-minimum wage for teenagers, all the DC-area high school students decided to march on the Capital in protest, our Principal stressed that if any student asked for permission to go on the march, he couldn't give it.

Only time administration gave anything like tacit permission for something like that. And there were, as you can imagine, a lot of protests available to join.

(It didn't pass, thankfully.)

Voofs -- after 35 years, I don't remember exactly. Something about how teens living at home don't need to support a family, maybe? Something specious like that -- this was high Reagan years.

Medford is making certain that tomorrow's curriculum is all climate-related, so that students do not have to feel that they are being anti-climate by staying in school.

I would have appreciated a day off from school as much as anybody else; my point was that I wouldn't have been very popular at a school that was that into baseball.

To be fair, as a parent I'd feel a lot better if things were not canceled for the same of sportsball. I get the importance of the subway series, but I feel like the sportsball mentality is what's poisoning our politics so much these days.

Certain things that are going to be important to the entire city and cause significant impacts should probably just be figured into being excused absences. Perhaps one of the weather days can be burnt in service of that, if it needs justification.
