I keep thinking about putting in a dog septic tank, but thus far I've been outvoted by everyone.

With our current 2 dogs, I've always dug holes in the yard, and put the poop in there, sprinkled with some dirt. When the hole is mostly full, I cover it with the remaining dirt, then dig a new hole. After a certain amount of time passes, and because there are limited spots in the yard where the ground is easy to dig, I'll start re-using spots that I used before. I haven't kept track of how long I go between reusing spots, but usually when I re-dig a hole, there are no signs of the prior poop, just dirt. But I wouldn't feel comfortable using the dirt in a vegetable garden.

Based on the link, maybe it decomposes quicker here due to the warm climate.
