it sounds like the city is rolling out curbside compostables pickup in our neighborhood by the end of this year!

We actually have our own compost bin, but it simultaneously doesn't produce enough for our entire yard and also doesn't compost quickly enough (or at all) during the colder half of the year - we don't hot compost, we lazy compost. So in the winter it'll be useful to be able, when our bin is full, to give the excess to the city. Plus, it's good for the environment.

Speaking of compost, until the level in the bin drops down a little I'm going to stash all the pulled weeds in the side yard. They can decompose a bit until I can shove them in the bin and stir it all around.

Compost bins need to be actively managed, and work if everything is done properly. That being said, you will only get a fraction of the compost you need for the average garden.

I've read that French farmers would top long rows of roadside trees, trying to get more biomass for composting.

The fence line and gutters of my house were proof that the lazy method works even for only leaves. It just takes time. For leaves, cold composting is a fine method. You just need some space.

What's not fine is laissaire faire 'composting' where things not actually compost read go into the bin. I think my orange peel method is better than that.
