the_great_tumblr_purge is now open for business, as is rationalistdiaspora. Other places to make friends include addme and addme_fandom. There is also an ongoing friending meme here, and of course there's lots of activity in the recent News post! And lately a lot of new comms have popped up or suddenly realized they want more users, and they're all posting in dw_community_promo and, a few of them, on fandom_on_dw. There is also a new non-fandom friending meme here.

There are intro posts here (with tumblr mirror here), here (this one is for image posting), here, here, here, and here. Here is one I just found that's specifically for rpers. If you need more directed help, some kind people are taking questions in the comments here.

You can find a directory of Tumblr users by other names here, and information about downloading your Tumblr content here.

There is a list of many fannish DW comms here, although I cannot say how active they all currently are. questionoftheday, thefridayfive, drawesome, and picture_prompt_fun are active, and over at dailyprompt we do manage to get prompts up most days. You may also want to check out dreamwidthlayouts, fandomcalendar, fandom_icons, and style_system.

mific has a post about image posting options here, and niqaeli has a post about automatically crossposting from Instagram. kore has one here about filtering tags on your reading page if you have a paid account. artemis1000 has compiled their own list of links specifically about customization.

Edit: I've thought of something that I'm not sure anybody else has addressed. Even though this is Tumblr-gate, not everybody will decamp. And some people will want to read their friends' Tumblrs even if they're here. You can view public posts on Tumblr through the DW reading page as feeds.

First, go to the Tumblr in question. Look at the web address, and copy it. Then go here. Paste the address into the box labelled "Feed URL" and add /rss to the end. Click "add feed". At this point you'll have to name it. I suggest using the same name it already has. DW will add _feed to the end of this name. Once this is done you'll automatically be taken to the page where you can "subscribe" to this feed, and new entries will automatically appear on your reading page, so long as they're visible to the logged-out public. Note: There is a small glitch where clicking the subscribe button doesn't take. You can tell if it worked because the button will change color and switch to reading "unsubscribe". If it didn't work, click it again - it will work the second time.

Thanks for the info about adding Tumblr feeds to the DW reading page! That's useful stuff for sure.

Same! I forgot all about the tumblr RSS feeds, and thankfully they work better than the /mobile pages (which for literally years have taken any post with more than one photo and helpfully replaced the entire thing, text and all, with "[video]").

I have no idea what tumblr's developers do all day. None.

Not that dreamwidth is great at mobile; it's bad enough that I am on the verge of actually learning to use git so I can start contributing CSS hacks to improve the mobile-to-desktop-and-back-again functionality. I was so sick of not being able to predict which links on my reading page would lead me to the ?format=light vs ?style=site vs ?style=mine that I switched the entire site into light format, but that makes reading on desktop miserable, so now I'm back to default....

FYI, this works for many sites besides Tumblr. Even if they don't advertise that they have a feed, they often do. I try the URL with /rss first, then with /feed, then with /xml.

The feed option is great. I use it to follow several blogs at Tumblr and elsewhere. I'll just add that I've sometimes encountered a glitch where you have to hit the feed's subscribe button twice. The button changes color once you've actually subscribed, so it's worth doublechecking the button color.
