The kind that hotels use in their big trash cans -- translucent and just open at the top. The bags are much larger than our kitchen can, but that gives us enough leeway that stuff doesn't spill out when we pull the bag out of the can. We could tie a knot in the excess, but we generally don't.

For smaller wastebaskets around the house, we recycle plastic bags from the grocery, drugstore, etc. the one next to my computer takes the larger Target bags, or others of a similar size. Aside from the bags for the kitchen can and the heavy black ones for yard waste / the litterbox*, we haven't bought a trash bag in well over a decade.

* We have 7 cats. The litterbox is 2 cement-mixing trays, one inserted into a black trash bag and then nested into the other. Dumping the litterbox is then a matter of lifting the top tray out and inverting the bag -- no touching of litter required, and spills are rare.
