The myth of an ending: why even removing Trump from office won’t save American democracy

I mostly disagree here for one important reason. If 45 is impeached due to corruption, things might not change, but if he's impeached due to collusion with Russia, then I'm certain Pence will also go, because it's clear he knew about some of what was going on, and it's equally clear that if he's going out, 45 will do his best to try to drag Pence down along with him. If the GOP loose the president and vice president to what will be billed in the mass media as treason, they'll be in impressively terrible shape - worse even than after Nixon resigned.

From any reasonable POV, one of the biggest problems with US politics is the GOP, which has become one one side a white supremacist party, and on the other side, a party of the psychoathically greedy rich, with a layering of dominionist nutjubs over both sides. Shake that up in some dramatic and destructive fashion, and they'll need to regroup into some new configuration.

That will take a few years, which will give US politics some breathing room, and the result is likely to be better. While the GOP has always been horrid, and has been expressively the bigot party ever since Lyndon Johnson single-handedly ended the Democratic Party's open support for white supremacy, it got far worse in the 90s with Gingrich's "Contract On America", and has continued getting ever worse along these same lines. Derailing that in a sufficiently dramatic fashion (and a president effectively impeached for treason will definitely do that), and we might end up with a notably less toxic GOP. Sure, the 70s & 80s were far from perfect wrt politics, but they were well better than now, and I'm fairly certain dealing a really serious blow to the GOP will help at least as much as all the proposals suggested here.

Also, while the filibuster is problematic, it's also pretty much the only stop we have to a tyranny of the 51% majority type of rule, and I think US politics would go even worse with it gone. It's well worth noting that while part of the reason that no previous President had quite so terrible a Cabinet is 45 is a uniquely terrible President, another reason is the end of the filibuster for Cabinet appointees, which previously guaranteed an overall bland competence, or at least the appearance of such, that was in most cases accurate.
