In my experience, the next step is demanding self-determination up to and sometimes including the vote. Admittedly, most of my experience with achieving sapience is from leftovers in the fridge and, in one particularly memorable rebellion, unwashed dishes in the sink, rather than laundry.

Minneapolis police put teeth in stricter body camera rules That's awesome and not unexpected - it was clear to me when I first heard about police body cameras, that rules like this, which could ultimately result in firing non-cooperating cops were essential for making sure that body cameras are used. I'm very glad to see this is happening and hope it spreads nationwide soon.
