Regarding the link about the valedictorian: Something like that almost happened to me, if the issue of race is removed. My main competition for Valedictorian (AKA my arch nemesis) protested his position as Salutatorian. Arch nemesis wanted the final grades to be included (which doesn't make sense, as graduation takes place before grades are posted), because I had a B in AP Calculus at the time. I still would have won anyway; I was honestly that far ahead of him. They tried to call him Co-Valedictorian, but I wouldn't go for it (and actually won that fight).
Meanwhile, his protesting sparked the girl who was ranked third to protest her rank. Turns out that she in fact had a higher GPA than AN. So, they named those two Co-Salutatorians, pretending that she hadn't beat him, and simultaneously upped both their GPAs and watered mine down so it would appear as a miniscule victory.
I could have protested that, as I knew each of our GPAs. It's not like I hadn't been calculating every possibility since Freshman year to ensure that I would be unbeatable or anything. I let it go though. Rank is rank.
Next year, they switched to a new system, where nearly anyone could be Valedictorian. And not one of them got higher than a weighted 3.9. Sad really.
(Turns out to be the longest response ever)
