Primarily because you have an accent, I'd say. Though when I studied the Bucolics our teacher insisted we read them respecting the metric (so stressing some syllables instead of others), so that's probably a factor as well.

Right... though when reading out loud we actually stressed syllables to match the metric. (I dunno if that's the correct thing to do, the teacher told us to read like that and so we did. Heh.)

If I remember it correctly, which I probably don't. Been years since I last seriously studied Latin. Though our teacher was obsessed with metric and verb paradigms and declensions and so on, so a lot of it is still stuck in my brain. (Most irritatingly, some fragments of some poems by Catullus, metric and all - but not the whole thing. Aaaaargh!)
