So Eva came in and explained why they were so long at the store. "I saw M and we were talking about the etymology of Tommy and how he had his hurt eye and the etymology of Boyboy, who disappeared - "
Me: Wait. Eva, what, exactly, do you think "etymology" means?
Eva: Well, nevermind!
Me: No, I'm curious.
Eva: Well, like the past of something?
Me: Yeah, but only of words, not of people or things!

Date: 2015-06-04 07:08 am (UTC)We don't wash our chicken over here - I'd never even seen someone do it until we started seeing US cooking shows. I wonder how it started up? So interesting.

Date: 2015-06-04 07:29 am (UTC)Assimilation doesn't hurt, it's really rather fun;
You think you wouldn't like it, but you haven't tried it yet.
When you can share a billion brains, why be content with one?
It took us just five seconds to absorb your Internet.
... so, I hope Eva likes etiology - "The word is derived from the Greek αἰτιολογία, aitiologia, "giving a reason for" (αἰτία, aitia, "cause"; and -λογία, -logia)"
"The word etymology is derived from the Greek word ἐτυμολογία, etymologia, itself from ἔτυμον, etymon, meaning "true sense" and the suffix -logia, denoting "the study of". Etymon is also used in English to refer to the source word of a given word. For example, Latin candidus, which means "white", is the etymon of English candid."
.... not to be confused with "Entomology (from Greek ἔντομος, entomos, "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented", hence "insect"; and -λογία, -logia)"
(Wouldn't life be so much easier if we'd been properly taught Latin and Greek in grade school like civilized people?)
Anyway: another word Eva may like is the one I thought of first, "Epistemology, ἐπιστήμη, epistēmē, meaning "knowledge, understanding", and λόγος, logos" - close, but not a match, whereas etiology fits her context perfectly.
*Vulcan salute* Geeks for the Win!
