Eva's spelling has her writing dictated sentences. Before she starts, I follow the neatly written script and remind her that a sentence has to end with a period or question mark.

"Or an exclamation mark!"

"Yes, but no. Look, it says right here: 'Exclamation points are overused in children's writing and should not be encouraged.' They're absolutely right, too. Stick to periods and question marks, kiddo."

She then proceeded to end every single sentence with an exclamation point. Gosh, who could have ever seen that coming? Since then, every time we get up to writing sentences, she recites the one about exclamation points being overused in children's writing and giggles. So long as she's happy?

Exclamation points are overused in children's writing and should not be discouraged.

They shouldn't be discouraged? Well, in that case, it was a great success, wasn't it. ;)

As if it's bad when children's writing features enthusiastic empasis, like children's thought and speech! Exclamation point away, kid!

(From that reaction, I think she gets the point pretty well, though, that exclamation points don't seem so self-consciously serious.)
