So, odd question. Why do we call it the "Pacific Northwest"? I don't live on the Atlantic Northeast, and really, how many northwests do the US and Canada have between them? One, and it's on the Pacific. So why?

Oregon and Washington are called the "Pacific Northwest" to distinguish it from the old "Northwest Territory," around the great lakes. The latter was acquired from Britain shortly after the American Revolution, and it was northwest of the states there were at the time. (I grew up in Michigan. I don't think school history classes outside the midwest pay much attention to the settlement of the area.)

And no, at least in NY they don't. What we got was a few weeks of NYC history which I *think* was actually supposed to be NYS history, but LOL, wasn't.
