I've got a virology professor who lectured about Tamiflu a couple weeks ago, and he thinks it's pretty well-supported as effective in speeding recovery from flu, but the problem is that the most efficacious time to take it is before any symptoms appear, so, uh, good luck getting patient compliance with that. And I'm not surprised it can have some really gnarly side effects, given how it acts to interrupt the viral life cycle, though in the case of an actual influenza pandemic the definition of "acceptable risk" gets drastically shifted.
