She came back with party favors - little boxes of goldfish crackers with a picture of the birthday boy on them. We rarely buy goldfish, and when I checked the ingredients I noted that there was no food coloring. "But," I said, "the multi-colored goldfish have food coloring. I mean, right?"

The next day I saw them in the store and checked, and it turned out that no, they don't have artificial food coloring either! Who knew? They're still unhealthy, but now you know. Of course, they aren't as good as they were when I was a kid. My grandmother used to cover them with "it's a dilly" spice blend, which you can't get anymore, and they were delicious that way.

My friend Jeniffer makes 'chex mix' every christmas that is goldfish with the spice/sauce from the box chex mix recipe, but it's just on goldfish, pecans, and .... something else tha I can't remember but it's also crunchy. OM NOM NOM.

To my great disturbance, my youngest ate box stuffing with goldfish...which resulted in my husband eating some...and then he got more because apparently Stove Top chicken flavor goes really well with goldfish. How strange. (I'd finished first, and I didn't really feel like stuffing myself to try it, so I still don't know first-hand.)

So, I searched on "It's a Dilly" to see if I could get any info on the spice blend, or a recipe. Instead I found this:
http://www.engageorganics.com/product/its-a-dilly/

No idea if it's really the same, it appears to be a different company than before, but I thought it might interest you.

I love goldfish crackers lol. They were my favorite as a kid (I guess that goes for most of us) but even now they are a yummy treat.

Nah, I don't recall them being artificially colored. They're cheap processed carbs, junk oil and salt, but they aren't too objectionable from an 'additive' standpoint. Fine to have for snacks at a birthday party - one of the big thrills of parties and holidays is getting to eat all the stuff one normally doesn't have because it's too fancy and/or unhealthy for every day.
