And so I picked up doughnuts, but I know that mostly its jelly doughnuts and the truth is that I don't like boughten jelly doughnuts. I like jelly. I like doughnuts. Jelly doughnuts from the store or bakery or chain doughnut place taste like chemical ick.

So I decided I might try making my own with a package of yeast that was about to expire. I mean, it's fried dough. Even with the jelly, how hard could it be?

Alas, all the recipes called for me to inseminate my doughnuts using a pastry bag, and I have no idea where mine ran off to. Finally I found one that asked me simply to make two doughnuts and squeeze them together before frying, with the jelly in the middle.

That recipe made 20, cut out with a peanut butter lid, and I had a little dough left over, probably enough for one more if I really was careful and rolled it out thinly, but I decided against that because 20 divides neatly by 5 people. I made 10 each with raspberry and strawberry jam and hoped for the best.

Lessons learned? During the second rise, they will unstick. Go through carefully and make sure no jelly is leaking out before you toss it in the oil. Also, I don't know if I just had the flame too high, but they cooked much faster than one or two minutes on each side! And yes, one doughnut is an adequate serving size. They're filling!

I liked mine quite a bit. Eva liked hers, but didn't jump around begging for more. Ana didn't like hers at all, and so I'm giving her latter two to the kid I pick up from school every day. If I make them again, I'm definitely halving the recipe.

Yay, the Fried Food Feast! Sounds like it came out quite well! Did you do latkes too?

I hear ya about store-bought jelly doughnuts. It's that they use that cheap artificially flavored and colored ersatz 'jelly' made mostly of corn syrup and carrageenan, then aged in cheap plastic bottles to give it that unique plastic flavor. Custard-filled are just as nasty; that stuff inside isn't really custard.

"Alas, all the recipes called for me to inseminate my doughnuts using a pastry bag"

... I'm almost positive none of the recipes called for that.

Inject?

You can also just use a freezer bag, though I suppose you'd still need the correct tip so if the tips were stored with your piping bag you'd be out of luck...

"Oh, Davros built us long ago
And taught us everything we know;
Creative killing was the rule
At the Davros Murder School.
And when the fun got thin
We went and did old Davros in...
Graduation in the Valley of the Daleks!"

Oh, I don't disagree with your choice of words - it was excellent. But you asked what else you could have used...
